The Kingsley Deluxe 1 is a single
channel, all tube, handwired 1 - 3W amplifier. It was designed to
produce full on tube amplifier overdrive at low volumes. This is
accomplished without the use of any kind of post power amplifier
attenuation devices. In this manner the amplifier has been created
from the ground up to allow the power section to work to its fullest
and yet still allow cranked up tube tone at neighbor friendly levels.
Unlike most low power guitar amplifiers the Kingsley Deluxe 1 does
not come with a tiny speaker, lacking in low end response, but instead
with a 12 inch Celestion for a full, responsive and fat sound. This
amplifier is perfect for recording, practicing or slaving to another
amplifier at gigs
At the heart of the Deluxe 1 is
a carefully designed power amplifier section that comes with a choice
of a single 6V6 or single EL84. The single output tube is operated
at the right voltage to allow cranked up tones with out going through
a tube every week. A triode/pentode switch on the back panel allows
two levels of output and two different types of tone. Triode mode
gives a warm, musical response while pentode mode delivers full
on punchy, sizzling rock tones. The 6V6 produces exellent results
all around although some players prefer the EL84 option as there
is more gain on tap for hard rock type sounds.
The pre-amplifier section uses
two 12ax7 tubes and features the usual Deluxe series controls (gain,
volume, treble, middle, bass and tone), but instead of reverb comes
with a thick switch which controls the amount of low end fed into
the overdriving stages, thus controling the tightness of the tone.
This can be very useful when going from one guitar to another or
when changing the amplifier settings for the best clean or overdriven
sounds.
While the other Deluxe series
amplifiers come with reverb as standard, the usefullness of reverb
on a very low power amplifier is somewhat limited. This is because
at high levels of power amplifier overdrive the reverb (which is
part of the pre-amp circuit) becomes almost un-useable and out of
control. However, there is a variable level line out on the back
panel which allows the complete sound of the amplifier (minus the
speaker) to be sent to external effects for further amplification.
In this manner the effected tone can now be re-amplified to any
level you require.
Partially as a result of the single
ended output stage the sound of the Deluxe 1 is very warm, bristling
with even order harmonics. While the clean tone is rich and articulate,
with great precence, this amplifier shines at producing great overdrive
tones. Sounds attainable range from mildly overdriven but punchy
rythmn tones (a la AC/DC) through smooth, sustaining, fluid and
rich single note soloing tones with a touch responsive bite (a la
Roben Ford), to over the top, thick searing rock tones (a la Gary
More and Van Halen). You can feel the sound as the whole amplifier
works to produce the end result, rather than just the pre-amp (as
in so many other amplifiers where the power amp and speakers play
a much smaller role in the shaping of the sound).
The standard speaker for the Deluxe
1 combo is a single 12 inch Celestion greenback, although there
are many other choices, such as the Celestion Blue or Jensen P12N
and the amplifier is also available as a head. The cabinet is made
out of solid pine and finished in distinctive blue tolex. There
are custom colours available upon request as well as optional hardwood
cabinets made with dovetail joints.
